Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is a听lifelong process of developing skills鈥嬧嬧嬧嬧嬧嬧 that听contribute to academic听and career success, and overall individual and collective听wellbeing. The five domains of SEL are: Self Awareness, Self Management, Interpersonal Communication, Executive Function, and Social Awareness. These can be applied in our lives across our work, home, communities and schools.

The Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Team at 黑料传送门 has partnered with University of Pennsylvania鈥檚 Positive Psychology Center to implement an evidence-based Resilience and Well-being Skills Program at 黑料传送门 and develop these skills within our entire learning community.听

The first round of training launched in March 2020 with a cohort of 750 people, and ongoing training continues to happen. Despite听all听the听challenges we faced nationally during this unprecedented time, our听outcomes听demonstrated increases in听overall wellbeing and听optimism听levels听and decreases in perceived stress levels. Participants also reported an 85 percent increase in self-awareness, 68 percent increase in adaptability, 75 percent increase in sense of connection to colleagues and a 61 percent increase in engagement with听work. Six months later,听follow-up scores demonstrate that participants have maintained resiliency. Not听only did they learn strategies that have helped them to manage challenge and stress,听but they have also听experienced lasting benefits from utilizing these strategies and mindsets.

听Start by recognizing the thoughts that听block听your way. Use听this simple听self-awareness听strategy听to听take control of听unhelpful听thoughts and听reframe听your mindset:听

1.听Catch It:听听Write down听all听the thoughts you have in response to a challenge you are facing.听

2.听Challenge听It:听 Examine what you wrote. Ask yourself if the thoughts are true. Are they always true? How likely are they to be true? How helpful are they?

3.听Change It:听Once you鈥檝e challenged the thoughts you can reframe them听to be more constructive.听听Here are some examples:听

  • Unhelpful听Thought:听鈥淚 can鈥檛听鈥"听Reframe:听鈥淚听need...鈥澨

  • For most of us, shifting mindsets doesn鈥檛 happen听immediately. We develop our habits of thinking听over time, and so it takes time to create new habits. The good news is like any other听positive听habit,听we can strengthen it with the right intention and practice. Make a plan听to use the Catch It; Challenge It; Change It strategy daily for a week. See what shifts you notice in your ability to navigate difficult situations with more听resilience.听

Resilience

The American Heart Association offers up the CEO Roundtable paper, Resilience in the Workplace: an Evidence Review and Implications for Practice. Read on to understand why all employers should care about resilience.

Writing for Positive Psychology, Courtney E. Ackerman, MA cites the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as defining individual resilience as 鈥渢he ability to withstand, adapt to, and recover from adversity and stress. Ackerman discusses the components of resilience including optimism, altruism, moral compass, and more, and then offers eight resilience scales that readers can use to gauge resilience.
